Naval Infantry was first introduced in the military forces of Russian Empire in 1668. The very first instance of it was created on the ship called Eagle, where besides the usual team of sailors and artillery personal, a special regiment of infantry was stationed. The purpose of that SPECIAL OPS unit (as we would describe it today) to “Board and take over enemy ships amid naval battles”. Further development of the Naval Infantry went on during Peter the Great's military campaign against Sweden.
